The all-important details

The details are finally coming together. It's been quite the adventure getting this year's cookie event set up, but I think we've finally got things finalized.

For those of you who are new to this, welcome! Here's how it works. Pick out cookie recipes that you want to make (try to keep it under 3). Pack up your baking utensils, recipe-specific ingredients, and shared baking staples (don't forget to bring those recipes!) Head up to the baking location and bake. Share your wares while stocking up on the cookies made by the rest of the group.

This year is a bit different because we're not going to be at a house. Ruth has found us a church with lots of space and ovens to bake in. So the good news is we should be able to bake a bit quicker than last year because we're not sharing one oven. Because the church is graciously allowing us to use their space, please bring a token monetary donation for them. We'll be collecting it and giving it to them when we're done. How much you donate is up to you. If you are looking for guidelines on what to give, let me know.

What to bring with you:
-mixer (stand or hand mixer)
-bowls (at least 1 sm & 1 lg)
-spatula, spoonula, wooden spoons, or whatever mixing/stirring utensil you prefer
-cookie sheets
-measuring devices (cup and spoons)
-cooling racks
-items specific to your recipe (sprinkles, chips, nuts, jams, peanut butter, etc.)
-storage bags or containers to take home your cookies (there will be a lot to take home!)
-any needed parchment paper, foil or plastic wrap

If you don't have all of these items, that's just fine. There will be plenty to share, but if you have stuff you can bring, that's best. That way we can keep the flow of the baking going.

For the past couple of years, we've split up the baking staples among all who attend to make it easier on everyone. Please select one of these items to bring and share with the group. Post what you'll be bringing in the evite so everyone knows. Keep in mind that you'll need to bring enough for the entire group of us to use in our recipes. I've put estimates after the item, but for some things that may increase/decrease as we know for sure who's coming.

Staples to select from:
-flour (2 5# bags)
-sugar (1 5# bag)
-eggs (18-24 total)
-brown sugar (1 standard sized bag)
-baking soda, baking powder, salt (one standard sized container of each)
-shortening (one small can or a package of the sticks, butter or unflavored; I'm not sure how much of this will be needed)

And finally, since we'll be doing this over a lunch hour, Tina, Ru and I thought it would be good to do a lunch while baking. What we thought everyone could bring a component of the meal and we'd make it while the baking is underway. The two options that were mentioned were sandwiches (and accoutrement) and pasta (and it's accoutrement.) If you have a preference, can you post on the evite what it is? Once we have a consensus, we'll split up the items so everyone's bringing a little something.

Whew! I think that's finally everything, but I'm sure if I forgot something, you guys will let me know. See you all in a week!
